Project Description

Protect Title: Trees for Cleaner Air in Dallas

  • Goal: What, as exactly as possible, do you hope or expect you would accomplish if you did this project? In what way would the environment be helped?

My goal is to work with at least three schools and 2 local authorities to plant at least 200 trees in parks, schools, or other public areas in Dallas, TX. I intend to do this project and expect to accomplish it. Trees act as natural air filters, absorbing harmful pollutants such as carbon dioxide and particulate matter while releasing oxygen, thus improving air quality, especially in areas with major pollution like my locality. Additionally, they provide shade and cooling effects, reducing the urban heat island effect, and contributing to overall environmental sustainability, making them essential for healthier cities and a more sustainable future.

  • In addition to the good done for the environment, what would you expect to learn?

I expect to learn four things from this project. First, I will learn about local ecosystems, biodiversity, and the interconnectedness of nature. Second, tree planting will teach me collaboration, engagement, environmental stewardship, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Third, it will teach me commitment and discipline. Finally, it will expose me to argument-making since I must present a proposal to the appropriate agencies.

  • Steps you would need to take to reach the goals: (Be as specific as possible. Include target dates.)
  • Obtain Permissions. First, I will request permission from local authorities or property owners to plant trees in specific locations. Target Date: October 1st 2023
  • Tree Selection. I will then determine suitable tree species for the local climate and soil conditions. Consult with experts or local arborists. Target Date: 8th October 2023.
  • Procure Trees. I will then source healthy tree saplings from a local, reputable nursery or supplier. Target Date: 9th October 2023.
  • Site Preparation. I will then outsource help, identify planting sites, dig appropriate-sized holes, and amend the soil if necessary to promote tree growth. Target Date: 9th – 30th October 2023.
  • Plant Trees. I will plant the selected trees at the recommended depth, spacing, and orientation in the same period. Ensure proper planting techniques to maximize survival rates. Target Date: 9th – 30th October 2023.
  • Watering. I will then implement a watering schedule and outsource help to ensure the newly planted trees receive adequate moisture, especially during the establishment phase. Target Date: 9th Oct 2023-Unknown.
  • Mulching. To save water by conserving moisture, regulate temperature, and suppress weeds, I will apply mulch around the base of the Target Date: 9th – 30th October 2023.
  • Documentation and monitoring. I will document the trees and locations and maintain them till they are strong enough 9th Oct- Unknown.
  • What problems do you anticipate?
  • Unfriendly climate. Dallas experiences periods of drought and extreme weather conditions, which can stress newly planted trees and require additional water and care.

ii. Replacement of the seedlings that will not survive the climate.

iii. Some authorities might not welcome the idea due to the responsibilities associated.

  • What help would you need?
  • Labor for planting the trees, watering, and mulching.

II. Maintenance labor and water sources.

  • Where might you get that help? (People, agencies, organizations, and so on.)

NGOs in my locality focus on clean air, friends, and fellow students.

  • Are there any safety issues about which to be concerned?

There are not major safety issues except potential allergies to the trees, and equipment handling issues.

  • When would you plan to actually start the project? When would you expect to finish the project?

1st October 2023. The end date depends on the type of tree and how well they adapt to the new environments. Possibly March 2024.

  • How would you know whether you achieved your goal or not?

By the percentage number of trees that adapt and grow. A high percentage, about 95% indicates success.

Questions

  • Briefly describe your project.

The project is motivated by air pollution in Dallas TX. The aim is to plant 200 trees in Dallas, Texas, collaborating with schools and local authorities to improve air quality and environmental sustainability.

  • What was your main goal in planning this project?

The main goal is to set precedence and create awareness about the role of trees in air purification.

  • Do you think your project would actually help to improve the environment? Discuss your answer.

Yes.

  • Discuss how this project would help you in the future, if at all.

The project would help me learn about local ecosystems, collaboration, environmental stewardship, and proposal-making skills, enhancing my understanding of environmental issues and community involvement. I might also cite it in a career interview to demonstrate my commitment and discipline.
