Lab 6: Think Globally, Act Locally: Questions
Part I: Think Globally
- State, national, or international topic: Organic farming
- I chose this topic because: Climatic changes and population growth have one interception, food production. Climate change is reducing the productivity of farms due to severe droughts and floods. Meanwhile, the world’s population is growing. There is therefore need for alternative methods of food production.
- One group or agency that we found that is working on this topic is:
Name: Winrock International
Address: 204 E 4th Street | North Little Rock, Arkansas 72114
E-mail address: communications@winrock.org
Telephone: +1 501 280 3000
- Briefly describe the group or agency and how it is working on the environmental issue.
Winrock International is a USA-based NGO working in over 46 countries in the world. The organization focuses on creating water and food security by increasing access to agricultural research and innovative solutions, especially in Africa, building safe agricultural food enterprises and addressing their transportation, and creating resilient agricultural markets in places such as Nacala. It also addresses forestry and agricultural competitiveness. Winrock partners with communities to develop and implement strategies that boost food production and are resilient in the face of a changing climate.
- How can you as an individual, get involved with or support this group’s work?
As an individual, I can support this course by donating in the name of agriculture, where the funds will be used to support solutions to low food production. Alternatively, they have the option to volunteer for 2-4 weeks where I would donate my time and expertise in provision of solutions.
Part II: Act Locally
- Local environmental issue or topic: Local Air Pollution
- I/we chose this topic because:
In my locality, Dallas TX, environmental pollution has been a major issue. What makes it worse and different from other parts is that the environmental pollution is different, where major air polluters are often located close to residential areas and affordable housing. This means that underserved communities who are likely to be living in those areas are more affected. Indeed, there is a 15-year life expectancy for those living in Dallas, depending on the area code. Air pollution leads to respiratory conditions like asthma, which puts people at higher risk for the coronavirus. There is a need to address this disparity.
- One local group or agency that we found that is working on this topic is:
Name: Downwinders at Risk
Address: 1808 South Good-Latimer Expy #202 Dallas, Texas 75226
E-mail address: downwindersatrisk@gmail.com
Telephone: 469-608-1972
- Briefly describe the group or agency and how it is working on the environmental issue.
This organization was founded in 1994 to advocate for clean air in North Texas. It has a history of defeating the burning of hazardous waste in the Midlothian cement plants, making it a strong force. The organization helps eliminate tons of air pollution by conducting independent research and advocating for cleaner practices. The organization also helps with clean air battles and each year organizes a class of to help participants think like organizers.
- How can you as an individual get involved with or support this group’s work?
The best way to support this organization is by volunteering for 2-4 where I would donate my time and expertise in the provision of solutions. I can also help them create awareness in the community and in advocacy since I have community reach. Alternatively, I can support this course by donating to fund operations.
